Visit Board Members to WHC in May 2008
From the 10th until the 18th of May the Dutch board of the Foundation will visit the orphanage. Manon Harmelink and Marleen Holtkamp will travel to Cambodia to talk to Nura about the future, to see how the children are doing and to examine some possibilities for our future plans. After their visit a summary of the trip will be reported on the website. The next visit will be in September 2008. Patrick Gillemans and Annette Koopman will be in Cambodia and will act upon the steps that will be taken in May.
Art expo Utrecht
WHC has been approached by Holy Apples, a network for young, talentfull artists. In the last week of May they will organise an art exposition in a very special location in Utrecht: a former church. During this week there will be attention for the work of these artists in many ways, and it will attract a large group of people. WHC has been chosen by this foundation, which means that a part of the benefit will go to the children of WHC. Everybody can visit the exposition, more information about the week of art can be found on the website www.holyapples.com
Introduction board Cambodia
In this month’s edition the board of Cambodia will explain to you what their contribution is to WHC. A few months ago Eveline succeeded Inge Sturk. Inge has been very supporting in the contact between the staff of the orphanage and the board in the Netherlands. In January Eveline joined them and now she and Dorie are the board in Phnom Penh. In the following lines they will tell what they’re doing for WHC.
We, Dorie and Eveline, live and work in Cambodia. Dorie for over 18 months, Eveline for 9 months now. Once a month we meet with Nura, principal of the orphanage, during a Cambodian diner. During this meeting we discuss the administration, next month budget and sometimes we’ll check receipts. Other topics are the daily occupations in the orphanage and new plans concerning the children and the future of WHC, like education and a new home. We are not the decision makers, but we are mediating between Nura and the board in The Netherlands (although Nura also remains contact with the board by email).
Every month Dorie collects the money from the Dutch banc account and takes this to the orphanage. Once in a while we also help when new volunteers arrive, but it’s not our responsibility to remain contact with tem. The volunteers know where to find us in case of any problems or emergency, but we stimulate them to explore it themselves and to find their way in the orphanage.
It is nice to be involved in this project, and every time we are impressed by the politely and big smiles of the children.
